corruption au meme
![]() The Sword Army pursues the Retrograding Army through history, encountering familiar settings and reliving old memories. Though strong, with every change in time and setting, the swords dread the old memories. As they fight to preserve history as it is meant to be, the Sword Army must steel their hearts and resist temptation lest they come to fight themselves… ![]() |
A popular fan theory is that the enemy swords you fight are actually your swords from an alternate universe who wished to change history. For this meme, feel free to make up your own starters or use one of the prompts below. Remember to state if your character is corrupted, not, or if you have no preference.![]() |
PROMPT IDEAS 1. How could you let this happen? They wanted to be left alone, their mood was poor, and maybe you should have noticed the signs but now that you have, it’s too late. They can’t stop these thoughts in their head and something in their soul has turned dark and ugly. Is it too late? Maybe you can get through to them… if not, are you ready to draw your sword? 2. Possession. Even the smallest trace of doubt can attract them— evil spirits. Once the dark spirit has latched on to your soul, it takes over and consumes you. Maybe the possession is gradual or maybe it happens suddenly. All you know is that everyone has regrets and anyone can doubt… this could happen to anyone. 3. Cry Wolf. We fought the same battles and shared the same meals together so it was only natural that we would be considered allies and friends. The fateful moment approaches and suddenly it is revealed: One of you is not a true friend. There is a traitor among you. 4. Becoming your own enemy. Your mission is to go back in time and let things happen as they were meant to be but their fall into despair was never supposed to happen, right? And so you went back in time to prevent their misfortunes but you keep failing again and again until, this time, you think you’ve got it. This time, you’ll be able to save your friend - but will you be able to save yourself too? 5. Reborn again. When destroyed in battle, the sword disappears only to return again anew. You can’t choose the fate you’re born with though and this time, someone has returned… from the wrong side. ![]() |

He has already given it some thought, actually. He doesn't want his brothers to have to go through being broken again. They don't seem to remember it, but - what if they do? What if it's something that lingers, in the back of their minds or in their dreams... the terror and pain of being shattered isn't something he wants for them.
But if he goes, if he's broken, who will remember all of those who came before? ...who will remember enough of what's gone on to see the patterns in their master's behavior that are only really obvious after quite some time?
And if he is broken... it would hurt. A lot. A lot...
His smile is a little bitter and melancholy when he shakes his head. "This isn't a mission I'm suited for. I already know that once I go I won't be coming back. ...but I don't want to be broken."

He wasn't the saniwa. Mikazuki wouldn't slap Midare, nor threaten him with some kind of draconian punishment akin to those back in the Sengoku or Edo period. They might not share the same blood, but there was a common bond from being forged from steel and fire.
In contrast, his smile was more warm.
"In that case, why don't we not go then?"
no subject
"If we don't go, the master will still send someone..." Or at least, that will be the case if this is a battle that has to be fought for the sake of their cause, and not a ruse to dispose of the blades that have been around too long and seen too many questionable things for the saniwa's comfort. "I don't want my brothers to have to fall in battle again just because I'm afraid."
He isn't Ichigo - he's not really the big brother of the Toushirou group. But he is the only member of it that hasn't been broken at least once, so he does feel some sort of responsibility toward them.
"And even if we don't want to go... is disobeying the master possible?"
no subject
"Direct defiance will not bode well. He will still send someone, but what he will do with us, I don't know. Possibly, he might have us melted down and start training the rest."
Thrown back into the fires in which they were smelted form. Not a good way to go, despite it being seemingly noble.
"I will do it in another way in which he will not expect it. When we head back into the past, I will go to a different time."
The greatest taboo to all touken danshis, the act of changing history. He doesn't mind dirtying his hands, after all it's either that or being drenched in the blood of those that he was assigned to lead.

A different time. He is actually considering going back to a different time. Not to defend the past from being changed - but to change it himself...? Midare's mind races as he imagines all the things that he might change. He could pinpoint the time when their master first started to behave oddly.
...he could prevent their master from ever being born.
It's possible, too, that it could be simply an escape, but what's the use of making the jump to another era if not to do something in that time?
"You can't do something like that alone...!" Which is probably why he's speaking of this to him right now. "You can't— You'll... you could be..."
no subject
"I apologize for startling you, and for my own lack of ability at being a good captain."
He points to the yard.
"It'll be even more beautiful in the days to come, I wish for you to be able to see it. For me, I have lived long enough. It is not a path I expect anyone to follow me, but to be able to make a difference... Doesn't it sound exciting?"
Sitting on shelves as a prized treasure, being a bystander to the times going by. His life was good, compared to the others who have touched flame or had shattered steel. There was now a role for him, one that he decides himself.
no subject
"To be able to make a difference..."
He repeats the words and keeps his gaze on the scenery. "In the old days, samurai were the people who made a difference. But even then they didn't do it alone. ...of course, you know that." He chuckles a little. He's old, himself, but the tachi is the "grandpa" of them all. "Swords like me were partnered with swords like you and wielded by samurai. If you're going to go back in time to some strange place, you better be sure to take a tantou with you."
But not one of his brothers. Here, they might last long enough for the changes Mikazuki will make to take effect, but if they break in the past, there won't be anyone to repair them. Now he looks to the older sword, his expression serious. "...you better be sure to take me."
no subject
His words are true, Mikazuki wasn't a Sanada Yukimura himself. Despite Midare's deceptively feminine qualities, he could feel his spirit being of a true warrior. Like his former master the Kitanomandokoro, or Nene as she was more commonly known by.
Now he has a partner in rebellion against the odds. He feels guilty towards the rest of the Toushirou brothers, but what was he to refuse Midare's wishes?
"Thank you. I will make sure to bring you along. A journey is much more enjoyable with a partner, is it not?"
It's a dark road ahead, others will call them mo̧nsţ̶e̸r̴͟s̸̵, but there is an eclipse to come.
no subject
"It is."
And if there's two of them, they can hopefully prevent each other from becoming the monsters they're sure to be painted as. He wonders what the saniwa will say to the swords who remain. He wonders what the both of them bailing out on the battle to make their way into a different time will mean for the other swords who have been assigned to this group, if they choose not to go with them. By removing themselves from the fighting, are they condemning them to certain "death"?
...but it was already a suicide mission to begin with.
"Whatever the outcome... it will surely be better than what it would have been if we'd followed orders blindly. ...isn't that right?"
no subject
There may be unexpected interference, factors that they did not take account. Both paths are risky, but the act of making a choice gives unimaginable power. Maybe when the war council starts, he will inform the rest. The more the merrier after all.
He doesn't know the future, wise as he may be. Mikazuki was no seer. He could not label a distinctive 'correct' and 'wrong' choice.
no subject
"Well..." He shrugs, and puts on a bright smile. It comes a lot more easily than any of the smiles he's managed since being assigned to this mission; having some kind of a plan in mind, however risky it might be, takes a lot of weight off his shoulders. He's still nervous, but it's a different kind of nervous - one that makes him feel a lot less sick.
"You're the leader of this team... so I'll follow where you lead."
no subject
His smile is sharp as the crescent moon.
"Down the dark road we go."
And they will go to where it began.
