CORRUPTION AU MEME

The Sword Army pursues the Retrograding Army through history, encountering familiar settings and reliving old memories. Though strong, with every change in time and setting, the swords dread the old memories. As they fight to preserve history as it is meant to be, the Sword Army must steel their hearts and resist temptation lest they come to fight themselves…

A popular fan theory is that the enemy swords you fight are actually your swords from an alternate universe who wished to change history. For this meme, feel free to make up your own starters or use one of the prompts below. Remember to state if your character is corrupted, not, or if you have no preference.

PROMPT IDEAS

1. How could you let this happen? They wanted to be left alone, their mood was poor, and maybe you should have noticed the signs but now that you have, it’s too late. They can’t stop these thoughts in their head and something in their soul has turned dark and ugly. Is it too late? Maybe you can get through to them… if not, are you ready to draw your sword?

2. Possession. Even the smallest trace of doubt can attract them— evil spirits. Once the dark spirit has latched on to your soul, it takes over and consumes you. Maybe the possession is gradual or maybe it happens suddenly. All you know is that everyone has regrets and anyone can doubt… this could happen to anyone.

3. Cry Wolf. We fought the same battles and shared the same meals together so it was only natural that we would be considered allies and friends. The fateful moment approaches and suddenly it is revealed: One of you is not a true friend. There is a traitor among you.

4. Becoming your own enemy. Your mission is to go back in time and let things happen as they were meant to be but their fall into despair was never supposed to happen, right? And so you went back in time to prevent their misfortunes but you keep failing again and again until, this time, you think you’ve got it. This time, you’ll be able to save your friend - but will you be able to save yourself too?

5. Reborn again. When destroyed in battle, the sword disappears only to return again anew. You can’t choose the fate you’re born with though and this time, someone has returned… from the wrong side.

A saniwa doesn't survive without being able to think quickly on their feet, and a single glance around tells Takakage all he needs to know. The deceased Toushirou's spirit body has already faded away, but he can hear the tantou's spirit still screaming as it was pulled back into the ethereal plane from which all tsukumogami sleep.

The question is, surprisingly, very easy to answer. It has been one he asked himself, after all.

"We all have our duty, Ichigo-san. They wished to support you - and they still will continue to support you. I will bring them back."

As he speaks, he continues pooling more magic into the containment field now appearing beneath their feet. Why is he able to say this all with a straight face? Because it isn't the first, and will not be the last, that he has to do it. He has already learned how to put his emotions aside.

They did all have their own duty to adhere to, and those words ring through Ichigo's mind like a set of clamoring church bells, so much so that he even raises a hand to press hard against the side of his head. His duty was to stop the fighting but....no, wasn't it to keep his brothers safe when they were unable to do so?

He barely notices the containment field slowly appearing beneath them even as he stares at the ground, golden eyes squinting as Ichigo tries to puzzle it out. The spirit does notice though, diggings its claws in deeper as it desperately tries to hold on to its prize, causing the blade's body to twist and contort with a grinding noise. The pain is worse than the Siege of Osaka Castle and the resulting fires, and it's enough to have Ichigo gritting his teeth as he tries to hang on to anything, anything that he can. Staying on all fours and upright now is more of a blessing than a right and Ichigo is only vaguely aware his mouth is moving though the words are clear as day in his mind.

"My duty is to watch over them, which is more than you are doing. You throw them into the battle with the notion that should they shatter you will bring them back as if it's no big deal. Do you even know what that feels like, or are you so callous as to not give it a second thought?"

Ichigo would not be able to see it due to the blinding light from the rune circles, but Kouraitsuru has drawn his blade as well. The tsurugi cannot fight conventionally due to his blunted edges, but he is a magical sword - and that magic prowess will only be boosted by his Saniwa's presence.

Takakage himself kneels down to be on the tachi's level, one hand trying to pry the spirit away the best he can.

"I do. My parents died in this crusade for their comrades as well, and I would not hesitate to lay my life down for you. And same for the others - it is merely that I cannot return once my body breaks."

But it is a good question.

"Bringing them back is the least I could do to honour their deeds and memories, because they deserve much more than having their light extinguished in a foreign land."
