SORTIE
Even among the swords in the army, Yamanbagiri was one of the most hard working swords. Driven entirely by his desire to prove himself, the uchigatana fought the hardest and do his assigned chores dutifully. Sometimes, this caused him to push himself a little too far, especially on the battlefield.
They just finished a battle. However, before it ended, Yamanbagiri took a blow for someone and get heavily damaged. He won’t break if they return now, which they will be doing.
Whether it’s during the trip back or at the repair room, someone on the team might decide to talk to him about it.
FREE TIME
When he have nothing to do - no chores, no expeditions, no sorties, nothing - Yamanbagiri would get swallowed up in his thoughts. So that left him with:
A: Walking around the hallways with his head down, letting his hood cover his face as always. Until he bumps into someone…
B: Sitting down outside and staring at the garden before him. His cape spills out behind him, like a large, tempting target for people to trip over it…
MAGAZINES
It was an accident. Maybe Kashuu left them lying arond, or Midare or Jiroutachi. Whoever did it, Yamanbagiri found some opened magazines and moved to pick them up. Until he saw the advice columns inside and started reading them curiously.
Anyone who walked past the room would see Yamanbagiri reading a… fashion magazine? What?
Wild Card
Throw me your best starters instead.
(OOC: If you want Yamanbagiri to be the starter uchi, let me know. Otherwise, I usually keep the starters vague and open.)

SORTIE
He hadn't said anything at first. There wasn't time for words. Instead, he'd cut down their enemy, yelled for help, and helped formulate their escape plan. He'd kept asking Yamanbagiri if he was okay. Could he stand? Could he walk? Could he understand what he was saying now? Questions to gauge the severity of the damage so that they could explain better to the saniwa.
With Yamanbagiri draped over his shoulder, Mutsu carries him back across the field towards home. They haven't completed their mission for the day but they can't press on either. They needed to retreat. With Yamanbagiri out of commission and Mutsu preoccupied, the team had been split. A pair went ahead to clear the path, a rear guard would follow up behind them to secure their escape.
For the most part, they walk in silence. Every now and then, Mutsu will remind him that they're "almost there" though, that was some time ago. But finally, once the shock passes some and he's certain Yaman isn't going to break on him now, he's able to address the next issue at hand, )
The hell were ya trying to do? Ya could have died right there!
Re: SORTIE
Carried on Mutsu's back and resting his head on one of his shoulders, Yamanbagiri slowly opens his eyes when he heard his words.]
But I didn't. [He's still alive, right now. If it have gone even worse, Yamanbagiri wouldn't even be sure if he'd survive.] I saw the enemy's attack and moved to take it.
[He knows he would need repairs, or that the saniwa would get worried about him. But he can bear with it.]

( No, Yaman, you aren't getting out of this easily. Mutsu is all too familiar with taking risks. In battle, some times you had to! But that was going too far. At least, too far for him. He would have gladly done the same if he was in Yaman's situation and he'd seen an ally in danger. But the fact that this had happened because he'd let his guard down... )
You didn't have to do that...
( Not for him. )
no subject
[Tch. In his state, he can't exactly walk away from this conversation. He's basically stuck listening to Mutsu's yammering. He knows and understand the risks when he take the blow, and accepted it far too easily.
If he died, that's his own fault and luck. For not being strong enough, skilled enough or just plain unlucky.
...He didn't have to do it, huh.]
If I didn't do it, you'll get hurt or even die.
[Which seems to rank higher than Yamanbagiri's own survival, in his own complicated thoughts about himself.]
no subject
( Mutsu isn't buying this. He isn't buying it at all and he keeps his eye straight ahead, making a point to not look at Yamanbagiri just yet. For now, he has him where he wants him and there's no escape. )
Quit actin` all selfish. Ya think if ya died it'd be ya're fault alone? I messed up and ya got hurt 'cos of it! I'm the one carrying ya back and I'm gonna have ta explain everything to master!
( He's mad. He's angry. He can't believe this right now. He was so so so close to having to carry back a broken vessel, a corpse of a spirit back to the citadel and how would he explain that to everyone? )
And it's not just me, ya know! Dunno if ya noticed but the others are freaking out too.
( And by the others, he means the rest of the team. )
no subject
He knows he would need to apologise, now that the rush of battle faded away. For making his comrades - the more real and famous swords - worry and the inevitable report to the saniwa.]
...I noticed, Mutsunokami-san.
[Look, he won't be entirely silent during this talk.]
But is it better to watch you get hurt? It's better if I take the blow!
no subject
I didn't say that! ( Him getting hurt wouldn't have been any better. ) It's not better! It wouldn't've been better if I got hit and it isn't better 'cause you did!
( GOD, YAMANBAGIRI. They've been in the army together for a long time-- almost since the very beginning. They couldn't have arrived at the same time but one definitely showed up not too long after the first. )
I'm not mad 'cause ya got hit! We're both swords so we're gonna get hit and hurt and, someday, we'll probably break. I'm mad 'cause of why! Ya think ya deserve to get hit more than me? It's "better" ya got hurt instead?
no subject
It's because I wanted to!
[Let him get hit, scratched, covered in blood (either his own or the enemy's). Yamanbagiri would welcome all of it and get tattered. Anything to further distance himself from the original Yamanbagiri.
After being in the army for so long, Mutsu would know about his complex. How deep it goes, however, might be another thing. Or if he ever heard Yamanbagiri's mutterings about getting injured before. The saniwa would know all about it from repairing him.]
If I get hit, I can get the scratches and scars I want!
[No matter how temporary those would be, when it's time for him to get repaired.]
no subject
But this is insane. The more he listens the tenser he becomes and Yamanbagiri can surely feel it in Mutsu's shoulders. Next, Yamanbagiri will feel Mutsu's body go slack though, as he
Suddenly drops Yamanbagiri down on the ground. And he isn't gentle about it at all, letting the other spirit fall like a heavy sack.
Freed from his burden, he begins to rotate his shoulders, rolling out the tension, and turns to face him, arms crossed, mouth in a tight, disapproving scowl, and eyes looking down. )
no subject
Then he found himself dropped to the ground and he winced from the sheer suddenness. The pain from the fall momentarily distracted him. After the pain dulls, he looks up and see Mutsu's scowling, disappointed face. Yamanbagiri stares up at him, not saying a word, before he looks away and gripping his dirtied cloak in his hands.]
no subject
( He sounds... disappointed. )
Ya finally get the cuts and scars ya want and ya still aren't happy with people lookin` at ya?
no subject
[No, he's not happy. No matter how many scratches and dirt he get, it's still not enough to bring him at peace. He doesn't know how to answer this and thus, stay silent.]
no subject
( And he extends a hand down to Yamanbagiri. )
So take care of ya'rself a li'l better. If ya won't do it for ya'rself then do it for everyone else at least.
no subject
He have to bite back the question "is that an order?" from spilling out his tongue.]
... Understood, Mutsunokami-san. I'll be more careful for Master.
MAGAZINES
What're you reading, Yamanbagiri?
( And she'll come over, peering to see what page he's looking at. )
Re: MAGAZINES
...Nothing.
no subject
Are you busy? If you're free, you can help me. ( She didn't have many swords compared to the older saniwa. Right now, there are only two full units and part of a third. It wouldn't be long until she had another troop at her command. And some day, she would have even more spirits but for now, even sending one troop out made the citadel seem a lot emptier. ) I need to write everyone's duties for next week.
( Who will be in charge of expeditions, who will go to the frontline. And even the smaller things like who will have kitchen duty or fieldwork. Normally, it was set! Someone would always do the same thing on Mondays and Tuesdays and someone else would do the same thing on Wednesdays and Thursdays... but this week, they'd gotten two new spirits: Shishou and Dotanuki. Their weekly chores would have to be fixed a little. )
no subject
He's thankful for the distraction and the different topic, as it would be awkward if she starts talking to him about the magazine.]
Yes, I can free, Master. [He reasonably guesses it's because of the two new spirits that joined them.]
no subject
Mitsutada will still have kitchen duty on Mondays, Kashuu and Kane will lead the expeditions on Tuesday but will have the next day free with the rest of the Shinsengumi swords. Some things are constant-- some spirits fight better with others and need to be together. She starts to arrange the training schedule for the new swords and her pens tops at the top of the line, where a mentor will be. )
... Have you met Shishiou and Dotanuki-san yet?
( Normally, she lets Yamanbagiri take a more passive role when it comes to new recruits. Kashuu, Mutsunokami, and so many other swords were better suited for welcoming squad whether it was because of their charisma or their organization. But this time, it looks like her first change is going to start with the spirit beside her right now. )
Horikawa-kun's already gotten them settled in but they need to start training outside soon.
( So Yamanbagiri's hypothetical duties would be sparring, leading expeditions, and going to the frontline-- being a combat leader. )
no subject
...I met Shishiou-san, but I only saw Dotanuki-san around.
[He haven't talk to the rough
tachiuchigatana yet. While Shishiou is friendly enough to approach him. After looking at the schedule again, he can see his options as a combat leader. Good. Either in the fields or around the citadel, he likes having work to do.]Shishiou-san looks like he would be eager to train with. I can't say much about Dotanuki-san. [He heard about the Dotanuki Masakuni swords and imagines how he acts. Rough and focused on fighting.]
no subject
Will you help train them? Doutanuki is a little scary at first, but I think you'll like him.
( And the two of them are a little self-conscious about their appearances in one way or another... not that she expected them to figure that out about each other anytime soon. But she hopes that it might help Yamanbagiri a little to meet swords that have similar issues. At the very least, it might help them. )
... I know you can handle it.
no subject
I don't know about liking him... but I'll train them.
[There's a chance they would team up during a sortie or expedition. He could see for himself how they fight, once they got used to living here.]
no subject
( And she writes down Yamanbagiri's name on the schedule. There. It's done. He's official in charge of training the new recruits this upcoming week. )
Just don't let him smell any fear!
( And she holds up her hands like bear claws at Yamanbagiri, roaring a little. "Rahr!" )
no subject
I definitely wouldn't let him, Master. I wouldn't have any fear for this.
[Only, oh, the usual pangs of insecurity.]
