[The Citadel is huge, so it's a good thing they have all the time in the world to dick around.

--Well, no, they don't. But the point is, it's a free day. There will be absolutely no work done at all. Unless you want to or something. If you do, you're pretty weird.

The dojo is always open for sparring and practice. If there's any sparring errand you've slacked on, now's the chance to make up! The horse stables are also full of activity, whether the horses are being tended to or rode around-- be careful not to let them trample the fields, though, which is full of rice sprouts and budding cabbage. The lake in front of the saniwa(s)' room has tiny frogs jumping about, and you could catch them in the palm of your hand.

The kitchen is full of food, if you're volunteering to make lunch or have decided that meal time cannot possibly come any later and you simply must prepare something before you die from starvation. While there has been a considerable effort made to make the Citadel look as homely as possible to the swords which come from Japan's past, there's speckles of technology here and there.

The TV room is a good example, with a huge screen sitting on top of a few console systems. Don't break them, you'll only be getting this luxury once. Take turns and play nice. The swords may also find themselves tending the fields with water sprinklers and hoses instead of watering cans, for instance, or heating up some leftover pie in the fridge instead of making another one from scratch since there's technology to preserve food well over a week. The armory and smithy are definitely a little bit more modern than they'd be back in the past, though much is still made by hand-- nothing beats the fine work of a master. Perhaps you'll have a few new friends today, or you want to try creating a cute little soldier spirits to die for you accompany you in battle. Make sure they enter the orb completely, or else it'll turn brown and crack.

Or perhaps you're one of the unlucky swords still stuck in the repair room, sword body still being re-smelted and fixed. Hope the saniwa is good at making you all shiny. If you want to skip all that waiting, perhaps you can try to use a helper token... but they're all in the saniwa's room! Guess you've got to use that Camouflage stat...

But if you truly cannot bear with staying in the Citadel, the time device the saniwa(s) have isn't locked away. You can go on sorties or expeditions to fill your time with something productive.

Just a warning: don't change the past. You won't succeed.

...You could always try, though.]

That's something he can understand, even if he isn't too averse to the idea of switching to modern foods. Futsu-no-Mitama is quite an old sword, even older than Mikazuki Munechika, so it stood to reason.

"Moderners like it a lot, but to each their own." Who could have made it, though... did someone order takeout again.

"Seriously. Whatever makes 'em happy, I ain't gonna judge." Even if that did seem to be squashed, savoury-smelling triangles of ... stuff. Frowning again, he puts the offending takeout straight back where someone else can take care of it.
"Long as someone round here knows what they're doin'..."

He never really understood the fanciful (??) ways of modern cuisine, and making sure pizza sauce stays consistent is also too difficult - so he's pretty much given up on that as well.

"Well, I think it's a modern thing." Humans are strange. "The saniwa or one of the other humans might have left it here."

But anyway. He has the miso soup bubbling away merrily, and it does smell nice.

Totally agreed on that front. Got to overcomplicate everything, huh? This must be that whole 'progress' thing. Everything changes. Even lunch.

"Yeah, that'd make sense." He nods and steps back - and then over to take a look at the soup bowl himself. And a sniff. That's definitely more like it.

"Y'know, I probably oughta learn to do that stuff myself, huh?"

He watches Futsu-no-Mintama's expression with a discerning eye, lifting a hand once the other speaks. His smile is dusted gently with gratitude - it always makes him feel better when someone acknowledges his efforts.

"I can teach you, if you'd like." It won't hurt to have more cooks around.

"You would? Huh. Thanks, man."

At least he's not going to have trouble getting stuff off the top shelves? But the rest of what's in here still has him rather baffled, to say the least, and any help he can get with this whole situation's appreciated. Still, he's not going to get anywhere if he just sits around and goes 'this is weird'... he's got to get in there swinging!

"Sure, I don't mind." Really, most of the swords here can't make more than simple poached egg and instant noodles. What an utter travesty. If they don't eat properly, they can't be in their best shape and look cool on the battlefield.

"What do you know, for starts? Can you cook anything?"

Best not to repeat instructions, oops.

Futsu gives an awkward laugh, looks aside for a moment - "I've only had hands for a coupla days," he says, a spot reluctant-sounding, scratching the back of his neck. "Ain't learned a whole lotta anythin' yet."
candlecutterpikachu: (made sweets for the kids)

[personal profile] candlecutterpikachu 2015-04-02 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Ah... right. Well then.

Mitsutada looks surprised for a few seconds, but he quickly covers it up with a few rapid blinks.

"We can start from the basic things, then. I doubt I'd need to teach you the simple stuff like boiling eggs and noodles, but I can do the rest, yeah."

With that, there is a ting and the rice cooker goes off.

"Oh, that should be done too." The scoop should be somewhere in the cupboards... "Do you want pickles on that?"
realmenknitplushies: (39.)

[personal profile] realmenknitplushies 2015-04-02 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well - 'a couple of days' is possibly an underestimate, but after upwards of a thousand years, what's a few days? Still. Not long. But the look of surprise still registers briefly - did he say something wrong?

He pauses for a moment, nods - "Sure. Throw 'em on there," - and runs the rest of the ideas around in his head. "I think I can manage chuckin' stuff in hot water, yeah. But anythin' else would be good."
candlecutterpikachu: (break day means productivity day)

Once he thinks about it, it starts to make sense - Futsu-no-Mitama is a ceremonial sword, much like Ishikirimaru and Mikazuki, so he probably had little exposure to the mundane. That can't be helped, so any remaining trace of confusion is instantly wiped off his face.

With practiced ease he fills a bowl with rice, dropping some pickled ginger on the top as garnish. He shows it to the other sword for a few seconds before setting it aside, moving on to working on the other dishes.

"Heat is a basic thing for cooking, and boiling things is a very good way of getting things done. There's a lot of technique that goes into it, though, especially for the more complicated stuff."

A pause.

"But we'll start with the basics, of course. Have you been on sorties often?"

If not, they could do it when they're both free.

A symbol of a god's power and an emperor's authority: made to threaten not fight, not something to be involved in everyday skirmishes and scuffles. He's been ... rather sheltered, to say the least ...

He nods, though, as he sees the rice sorted out - that'll do just fine, he thinks. At least it looks a lot less weird than the pizza.

"I ain't been out a lot... but what's that gotta do with cookin'?" Pretty sure he's missing something here...

That's alright, though. It's a status that Futsu shares with quite a few of the older swords, so they could all learn together.

"Ah, I'm needed quite often on the front lines too, so I'd need to check our schedules." Problems with being both an effective sword and an effective housewife cook... "But if you're around a lot, that makes things easier."

If anything, the older sword could always hang out with the jijis.

All in it together, that sort of thing? He's not met too many of the other old-timers, yet...

"Yeah, I get ya," he replies. "I guess I ain't gonna be sittin' around here forever - but while I am, might as well do somethin' useful, right?" And boy, is that a weird concept after all this time...

It's a good sentiment to have, nevertheless. They were brought to life to be useful, after all - and the innate desire of all swords to serve still remained.

"I think you'll be on the front lines soon, if the other older swords' experiences are anything to judge by." That was what they were made for, most of them. "Though how often will depend on the Saniwa's decision."

She always made good ones.

"That's good t' hear," Futsu says with a smile. To be able to do something with his time, not just be a symbol... man. It's welcome, to say the least. "An' I'm lookin' forward to seeing what she has t' say."

But for now... he's back to peering around the kitchen.
candlecutterpikachu: not left (right)

"She's a ramarkable person, I think." Running a whole household with about fourty swords, organizing sorties and rituals - it's always surprised him how much she can get done in just twenty-four hours. But then again, there is a time machine on the grounds, so...

While Futsu looks around, he starts pulling things out of the fridge.

"Are you alright with salad?"
giftedbythunder: (.03.)

[personal profile] giftedbythunder 2015-04-05 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
He smiles at the first comment: good to know that he's working for someone who's really worth it.

The question takes a moment, but he replies - "Yeah. Go on. That's just ... vegetables and all that, right?" Surely something like that can't be too messed up?

[personal profile] candlecutterpikachu 2015-04-09 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Futsu's surprise is mirrored on Mitsutada's face for a moment before he composes himself and realizes that he should have probably said that some other way.

"Vegetables, yes. Let's see..." Hmm... "We've got some carrots, lettuce, cucumbers... who took the pickles jar?? - tomatoes, stuff like that." A frown, as he tries to remember who usually eats the pickles.

"I'll throw together something quick, yeah. Do you like Japanese style, or something else?

[personal profile] giftedbythunder 2015-04-09 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"There's a difference?" he asks, still looking rather puzzled. This whole concept of 'foreign food' is still pretty new to him, after all. (Except that it apparently involves flat dough things.) Honestly, even some of the vegetable names are sailing over his hilt...

Futsu scratches his head - "As long as it actually looks like food, I'll give it a go."

"Yeah, there is." He speaks while pulling out things from the fridge, examining them closely. It's good, everything's fresh and looking tasty. Yagen and Horikawa did good on grocery shopping.

"It's all in the flavour, really. Our cooking emphasizes on texture and quality, foreign foods have different things." Lots of different things, too. "There're people who use spicy sauce, sour sauce, all kinds of them."

Which reminds him.

"It's mostly an 'each to their taste' sort of thing here, though. Sometimes we have foreign food days, you'd be able to try them then."

There's a spot of frowning still going on on his part, here. At least what's getting pulled out looks more edible than other options, not that he's much of a judge...

"... There are? Huh. Suppose I oughta at least try somethin'." After all, with everything else being so new, what's a few new flavours...
